Let’s face it, supporting NBA players, owners and stadiums these days is getting tough. And the bottom line is the fans are required to cough up the money to pay the salaries, etc. in part with ticket prices that have gotten way out of hand in recent years. We are in a tough economic period and spending hard earned dollars on sporting events may not be high on the list of many households. Die hard fans like those of the Sacramento Kings have been giving up their season tickets in part because the team stinks, but also because the price has risen so much it’s easy to compare a few hours at a Kings game with a night or weekend out of town, and choose the later.

When the Sacramento Kings came to Sacramento as losers and stayed that way for a number of years, they still sold out because the price was affordable, families and neighbors sat in the same seats game after game. Like the stock market the Kings organization and even most of the Kings fans believed it would go on forever. But the yearly price increases and recent losing seasons were taking their toll on season ticket holders, even before the housing crisis. That puts us at the point we’re at now with talk about where the team may move next, San Jose or Los Angeles.

The empty seats are not a unique situation in NBA arenas this year. If you watch many of the NBA games you will see enough empty seats for a truck to drive through and even the best teams aren’t having an easy time this year. And the only solution is to cut the overhead or bring in new revenue. And I don’t have any specifics on how they should do that, it’s not my department.

All I can tell you is what most of our customers told me as they dropped their season tickets; the price of the product was no longer worth what they get in return. And it’s nice to have a nice fancy arena with all the amenities, but the luster starts to fade when the price goes up, and the economy goes south with the wins.
