Looks like the proposed merger between Ticketmaster and Live Nation hit another snag as Britain’s consumer watchdog, The Office of Fair Trading will be referring it to the Competition Commission (Routers). The concern of the group is that there would be less competition in both promoting concerts and the cost of tickets which are kept in check in a competitive market. The US Department of Justice is currently looking into the merger on this side of the Atlantic.
It’s hard to believe that with the absence of competition that anyone could expect a huge company such as Ticketmaster/Live Nation would keep ticket prices down when they have stated ticket prices are way undervalued as it is. They will take more and more tickets for different programs, VIP Seats, Auctions, Fan Clubs etc that bring in much more than the typical face value of the ticket. And the fans will pay until they are chases away by the high prices. Then how will the artists pay for their mansions?
