Newspapers in this country seem to be a dying breed as indicated by the many layoffs and losses occurring in the industry. This is the result of many reasons, one of course is the younger generation not seeming to care much about current news events. Or they get their news from the internet, and not necessarily newspaper websites.
The other problem is small businesses have more choices on where to spend their advertising dollars and they are spending much less at the local paper. And that could be in part to the lack of support they have for local businesses. What we have noticed as a small business, is the reporters for newspapers such as ours, are also going to the internet for information about stories rather than checking with local companies for answers to their questions.
A case in point is when a local newspaper ran a recent article about tickets and various ticket companies located throughout the country, none of which was a local company. There were several errors in regards to ticket pricing and how the companies came to be, but what go me was not so much the errors, but how they got the errors.
I was told by the reporter that he didn’t see my point , since the story was actually about how easy each service was to navigate and buy tickets, not necessarily pricing and how the company started. He told me he had gotten much of his information from the “About” pages of the companies in question.
This seems to me to be an extremely lazy and biased way to write a story, and the point I would like to make is that if he had contacted a local company such as ourselves who have been in the ticket business for over 21 years, he could have gotten the correct information.
And why should he bother to check locally? Well for one thing newspapers are supported in a large part by the local businesses who advertise in their paper and rather than check with a company that does no business with them, they should give the mention to those that have supported them for years with their advertising dollars. They might find us more willing to spend with them, rather than on internet advertising.
