Sacramento Union Another Newspaper Gone, Another Silent Voice

by on Mar.05, 2009, under Business News

Today our local paper the Sacramento Union closed their doors and quit publishing the paper. The sad part is their readership was increasing, but the local businesses could not keep advertising at anywhere near the same levels of past years.

We’re going to miss the local coverage brought to us by local workers who knew the community and businesses well. Some of us will have a hard time staring at the computer in the morning while watching news and drinking our coffee, and read a little less that day.

As the co-founder and editor-in-chief for the North Sacramento Union, the predecessor to the current incarnation, the paper will be missed. But I wonder if it was less the advertising than the internal decisions that caused the real driving force behind the paper, Dave Gwaizdon, to leave. Dave was community focused and the real drive that finally helped the Union gain ground and a solid readership. When he left, it was inevitable that it would end. Since the original Union closed its doors 15 years ago, it has had many resurrections, first with ours in 2001, then with the glossy mag that was destined to fail, and finally with the free tabloid concept. I hope that someone comes along and revitalizes it once again.
